The Vivian Ellis Prize

The Vivian Ellis Prize

The competition was first mounted in 1985 to celebrate the 80th birthday of Vivian Ellis CBE, Hon GSM, President of The Performing Rights Society. Following Vivian's death in June 1996, the Prize continues in tribute, not only to his memory and consummate skill as a writer and composer, but also to build his belief in the importance of training and education for young talent.

Vivian Ellis

Vivian Ellis is best known for his musicals Bless The Bride and Mr Cinders which have a timeless quality ensuring record-breaking hits for performers as diverse as Billy Hale in 1929 and Sting in 1989, both with the same song "Spread A Little Happiness". He wrote songs for John Mills, Flanagan and Allen, Rodgers and Hart, and was still writing until shortly before his death in 1996.

The competition provides an opportunity for composers, lyricists and bookwriters/librettists working in Britain to benefit from the guidance and encouragement of some of this country's most distinguished personalities and established practitioners in the world of musical theatre.

Past judges have included: Lionel Bart, Don Black, Dan Crawford, Roger Greenaway, Sir Cameron Mackintosh, Sheridan Morley, Mike Ockrent, Sir Tim Rice, Julian Slade, Dame Wendy Toye, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Lord Lloyd Webber.
