The Vivian Ellis Prize

Details Of The Competition

This year, for the first time, a more intensive selection process has been undertaken. A team of up to 40 "Readers" have been selected to ensure that every entry to the competition is assessed by at least two professional practitioners (directors, musical directors, producers and musical stagers). Each entrant will receive a short assessment of their work and a simple marking system will be used by the readers to help develop a short-list for assessment by the main judges.

From this process of reading and marking will come a short-list of works for consideration by the celebrity judges and a small team of senior professional judges who will consider and again formally comment on each work. Eventually a group of finalists (probably representing 5 or 6 musicals) will be chosen. As in previous years, a series of extracts will then be presented in front of an invited audience and the general public who will benefit from enjoying the wit and reactions of the celebrity judges.

This year the audience will also hear an assessment of the full works by one of the senior professional judges and, for the first time, the winners will be chosen from both an assessment of the showcase extract and a deeper assessment of the full work. This more extensive process has grown from detailed discussions with many of the musical theatre practitioners and champions of new work who have followed the fortunes of the Vivian Ellis Prize from its earliest days.

The 1999 Showcase will be held at the London Palladium on the afternoon of Tuesday 21st September. Tickets will be strictly limited to ensure space for producers, agents, backers and theatre managers. If you would like to apply for tickets (available with a suggested donation pledged to the charity based on £10 each) please use the link below.
